太极拳是一种在中国被修习数百年的著名武术。它将缓慢轻柔的动作、深呼吸与冥想三者结合在一起。太极拳的一招一式,都透着中国传统哲学中的重要部分——和谐。

Tai Chi is a term in the Chinese traditional philosophy. It comes from "The Book of Changes". In the time of Song dynasty, the Neo-Confucianist Zhou Dunyi wrote the book "Theory of the Tai Chi Pictures" and draws " Tai Chi " into a shape of circle in his " Tai Chi Picture". The inventors of Tai Chi are enlightened by this picture and invent Tai Chi Chuan with the continuous movement of drawing circles in the air as the constant movements, absorbing the skills of guiding the breath with the wills, using the stillness to control the motion in the traditional qigong and Taoist breathing exercises and combining the sets of other kinds of wushu. It has absorbed the thought of the Taoist School, advocating the unceasing change of yin and yang, false and true.

“太极”本是中国传统哲学中的一个术语,源自《周易》。在宋朝时,理学家周敦颐著写《太极图说》,并在其所绘的“太极图”中把“太极”画成一个圆圈状。受此启发,太极拳的发明者们,以双手画圆为太极拳贯穿始终的动作,同时吸取传统气功、导引术中以意引气、以静制动的功法,再结合其他拳术的击打套路,创制出了太极拳。它接受了道家的思想,主张阴阳、虚实是在不停变化的。

In ancient days, Tai Chi Chuan was once performed as combat martial arts, which was created as a unique and profound self-defense technique by Chen Wangting in Chen Village, Henan Province. As an ancient Kongfu, Tai Chi Chuan includes quan, sword, broadsword, spear, push-hand,etc. Especially push-hand is well known for its tactic and technique, the powerful and aggressive opponent being defeated by a small clever attack or an abrupt explosive power. As a typical artful Chinese Kongfu, hand push has been highly popular with the small and weak people.

The 24 style Simplified Tai Chi Chuan, which is widely circulated, was compiled by the State General Administration of sport of China in 1956 and absorbed the essence of Yang's Taijiquan. It has now become a common citizen's fitness exercise in china.

Tai Chi is an unusual form of martial arts whereby we believe in building strength —— mental and physical from within, softness is stronger than hardness, moving in a curve is better than a straight line, yielding is more efficient than confronting. Today, Tai Chi is in the process of being subjected to rigorous science studies in the West. Now that the majority of health studies have displayed a tangible benefit in some areas to the practice of tai chi, health professionals have called for more in-depth studies to determine mitigating factors such as the most beneficial style, suggested duration of practice to show the best results, and whether tai chi is as effective as other forms of exercise.
